“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. ~Hippocrates
When I first started this blog, I was all about an only Raw Food Diet. However, since the beginning, I have learned so much about foods, my body and the things I need to keep me feeling well. I am not a "labeled" food eater, but if I was, the closest thing I would consider myself to be would be a Pescatarian (a vegetarian who eats seafood). I try to stick to a mostly raw, sometimes cooked vegetarian diet. However, I occasionally eat salmon/fish and a little eggs and dairy(cheese, butter) from time to time. I try to eat mostly whole foods and I rarely eat pre-packaged and processed foods. What do you do when you have to eat out?
When dining out, I choose the best foods possible without being overly picky about what every single ingredient is in each dish. I eat out about twice a month, but when I do...I make it count. :) I always choose a seafood or vegetarian main course and it has to consist of my favorite foods.
I try very hard to stay away from fast food joints. However, sometimes it is just not possible. So when I have to grab something I opt for a salad or onion rings or something like that. The last few times I have travelled by car, I fixed me a big salad and enjoyed the ride. I think I will do that from now on. It was so enjoyable knowing that I was eating a healthy & delicious meal and that I had planned ahead.
So what are some of the staple foods I eat?
I drink a lot of Green Smoothies. I eat a lot of salads, fresh fruits, nuts & seeds.
When I cook, I mostly cook fresh vegetables (buying organic whenever possible). My favorite cooked foods are sauteed spinach, stir fry collard greens, roasted sweet potato wedges, zucchini pasta and kale. I love cooked salmon and will occasionally eat other seafoods.
I currently cook using mostly olive oil when the recipe calls for oil. However, there are a few things I'm going to try out in the very near future using coconut oil.
Do I eat breads?
I try not to eat a lot of breads. If I'm eating out, I may eat a roll or two, but at home I limit my bread intake. I normally only eat bread when I'm craving eggs (which is less & less here lately). I use the bread to make an egg sandwich. I recently tried Arnold's Sandwich Thins and I really like them. I will buy them whenever I decide to eat bread from now on. Other than eggs, I like toasting the sandwich thins and making almond butter & banana sandwiches. Sometimes I just need to switch it up a bit. I'm always conscious of how eating certain things make me feel though.
When it comes to eating food, don't judge me and I won't judge you. I often tell people who ask me for advice to eat whatever feels best for their bodies. I don't expect anyone to eat the same things as I eat. If you eat chicken, pork or beef, that is perfectly okay. Just try to eat whole foods and be mindful of how you prepare them.
The key to eating healthier is to cook your own food most of the time. This way you know exactly what you are putting into your body. Try to Eat a Mostly Raw diet while eating as much fruits and vegetables as possible.
Let's just encourage each other to create a Healthy Foods Lifestyle.
